Vitamin-C Science

Retin-A

Retin-A is often used to improve the appearance and texture of the skin. In the first month of use it produces a mild, superficial peel of the epidermis. Retin-A has effects on both the superficial (epidermis) and the deep (dermis) parts of the skin. The major benefit is to decrease the effects of sunlight caused aging by increasing the speed with which the surface cells are replaced. The layers of skin become thicker as in youth.

Hydroquinones

Hyperpigmentation refers to the brown skin spots caused by an excess of the skin pigment melanin in certain areas. It can be hereditary, as it is in freckles, occur with increasing age, inflammation, be related to pregnancy or the use of oral contraceptives. Hyperpigmentation usually develops gradually and increases with exposure to sun. Skin lightening can be achieved by using a hydroquinone cream. These products slow down the production of melanin in the area to which they are applied. This gradually lightens the spot being treated. The fading process usually takes about 1-2 months with twice daily applications.
