Fat Injections - Lip Lengthening
Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is generally done to change the shape
and contour of the ears, setting them back closer to the head
or reducing their size. This procedure may be performed on anyone
over the age of four to five years of age when maximum ear growth
is generally completed. It is often recommended at an early age
rather than later to avoid any psychological stress related to
this problem. Ear surgery on adults is possible under local or
general anesthesia and is effective in achieving the appearance
desired.

The Procedure
This surgery is performed in our on site certified ambulatory
surgical facility. Incisions are made behind the ear and cartilage
is reshaped or removed. A head dressing is worn for three to
five days and sutures are removed in one week. There is very
little pain after surgery from this procedure.

The facelift procedure offers the opportunity to turn back
the hands of time and re-capture a more youthful look. One wants
to improve skin, subcutaneous tissue, and muscle balance to achieve
this result. The effects of gravity, sun exposure, life’s
stresses, and even genetic pre-disposition are all factors contributing
to the signs of aging. Whether you are noticing sagging, wrinkling
skin, prominent skin folds around the chin and neck, or deep
creases between the cheek and mouth, the facelift procedure
(technically known as rhytidectomy) can help improve your appearance.

The Procedure
This surgery can be safely performed in our on site certified
ambulatory surgery facility on an outpatient basis. We incorporate
a total skin care plan to prepare our patients’ skin for
their surgical procedure. This decreases healing time and gives
a better skin appearance. For optimum results we recommend a
two-week regimen of skin preparation prior to surgery.
When performing the facelift procedure, Dr. Bloom addresses
not only the loose skin and laxity of some facial muscles, but
the loss of the subcutaneous (fatty) tissue as a result of aging.
Strategic facial fat injections are added during the face-lift
procedure to improve subcutaneous tissue quantity. Using a technique
promoted in recent years by Sidney Coleman, M.D., the fat has
shown to have a 50% to 80% survival rate over eight years. A
TCA peel may be added to refresh the skin
and return the skin to a more youthful glow.
Our goal is to retain your appearance but at a more youthful
age.
Please feel free to call our office to schedule a personal consultation
to answer questions about your individual needs.

Our eyes can be considered the windows to our souls…reflecting
a vast array of emotions. Whether we are happy, sad, frightened,
or excited, the eyes reflect our feelings through expressions.
Yet physical changes such as wrinkles, deep lines, droopiness
or puffiness of the lids, interfere with these expressions.
As we age, genetic tendencies, exposure to sun, and the stresses
of daily life all contribute to producing eyes that reflect a
tired, aging appearance. There are a number of surgical procedures
to effectively correct these problems restoring the eyes to a
more youthful look, rested look.
The Procedures
These procedures are performed in our on site certified ambulatory
surgery facility. During your examination, Dr. Bloom will help
define your goals.

Some of the alternative treatments for the upper lids include
excision of excess skin, muscle, or fat. Skin resurfacing is
also an alternative. These procedures are performed with a laser
to decrease bruising and swelling. A part of the brow may also
require lifting to achieve the desired result. This procedure
is called a modified brow lift.

Improving the lower lids may require trimming or repairing the bulging fat
pads. There are no scars on the lower lids. The incision is made inside
the lower lid. Trimming the
fat can reduce the fullness under the eyes and give them a more
youthful appearance. Strategic injection of fat under the eyes
helps to alleviate a “hollow” look.

Rhinoplasty, or surgery to reshape the nose, is a quite common
surgical procedure that can make a difference in how you look
to both yourself and others. The nose, being the most prominent
feature of your face, when altered, can change your appearance
dramatically for the better, or simply offer slight improvements
to your facial appearance overall. Whether you are looking for
a dramatic difference or a simple modification to your nose this
procedure offers many alternatives. Rhinoplasty can reduce or
increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or
the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle
between your nose and your upper lip. Your goals can be communicated
to Dr. Bloom through the use of a computer imager.
Rhinoplasty can also be performed in conjunction with other procedures to relieve nasal obstructions that can cause difficulty breathing.

The Procedure
The procedure is done in our on site certified ambulatory surgical
facility. General anesthesia is used with the latest medications
and techniques to decrease post operative drowsiness and discomfort.
The bone and cartilage skeleton is reshaped so that the skin
will drape over the aesthetically changed appearance. Tape and
a splint are worn for one week after your surgery. There is usually
little bruising. Swelling may last for several months.

Although fat injections have been done for many years, with better understanding of the procedure, techniques have been developed which give good long-term results. Fat injections are now used in the brow, cheek, and mouth areas to give a more youthful appearance. In the past, many facelifts left the face appearing pulled. Contributing to this problem was the gradual loss of facial fat with aging. Replacing the fat gives the face a more natural and youthful appearance. Fat can also be used to build up the appearance of the calf muscles and the buttocks. Limited fat injections can be done under local anesthesia, while more extensive injections are usually done under general anesthesia.
The fat used is obtained from the patient’s own knee, outer thigh, or hip areas.
Studies show a fifty to eighty per cent fat survival rate. While touch up injections may be required with time, I have many patients who have had fat survival for the entire five years that I have been performing the procedure.

There are three methods that are employed to enlarge the lip
- insertion of a foreign body, injections of fat, and lengthening
of the tissue inside the lip. The latter procedure is done with
a similar technique that plastic surgeons use to lengthen skin
or other parts of the body. This technique is a form of "W" plasty.
This is a procedure that can be done under local anesthesia.
The lip remains swollen for several days but there is little
post operative pain. During consultation, it will be decided
which method will offer the best result.
