Dallas Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, technically known as Augmentation Mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breast.

Each of us has our own vision of physical beauty.  Because our bodies and lifestyles vary, one size does not fit all when it comes to making choices in breast size.  While some may prefer a fuller size, others may prefer a smaller more athletic appearance.

In your initial consultation, Dr. Bloom will evaluate your health, your breast size and skin tone, and explain the breast augmentation surgical procedure and the techniques used based on your personal needs.  If your breasts are drooping he may recommend a breast lift in conjunction with your breast augmentation.  He will assist you in choosing the best implant style and size to help you achieve your goals.

The Best Candidates for Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is most commonly performed to enhance the body contour of a woman who may feel her breast size is too small, to correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy, to balance a difference in breast size, or for reconstruction following a breast surgery.

Breast augmentation can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence.  The best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are looking for improvement in the way they look.  If you are physically healthy and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery.

Breast Implants

There are two commonly used breast implants; silicone implants and saline implants.  Depending on your needs and personal preferences, Dr. Bloom will assist you in choosing the best type of breast implants for you during your consultation.

Saline breast implants are filled with a salt-water solution.  Saline is a natural solution and if the implant is ruptured the body will safely absorb the fluid.

Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel.  Silicone is used for breast implants because they are essentially non-reactive and because of its natural feel and movement.  The silicone breast implants are more cohesive than those in the past and much less able to leak following a puncture.  Cohesive means that the silicone binds to itself and essentially won’t leak through a small defect.  After years of extensive research with silicone implants, the FDA again in November of 2006 approved the use of silicone breast implants for cosmetic patients.  To have silicone implants you must be 22 years old and be well informed about silicone implants.

Following a comprehensive visit with Dr. Bloom, he and our Patient Consultants will work with you on an individual basis to determine the breast implant size that best serves your needs and fulfills your own vision of beauty.

Preparing for your Breast Augmentation Surgery

When preparing for your breast augmentation we recommend that you follow the guidelines and instructions you will be given at the initial consultation and during your pre-operative visit with our nursing staff.  This visit will take place two weeks prior to your procedure.  Should you have additional questions or concerns you are welcome to schedule an additional consultation with Dr. Bloom prior to your procedure.

Your surgical procedure will be performed in our state-of-the-art fully accredited office based surgical facility located in the Medical City Dallas Hospital complex.  Our AAAASF (American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities) accredited Surgicenter is staffed by highly trained experienced Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), Registered Nurses (RNs) licensed by the state of Texas and Certified Surgical Scrub Technicians, all with many years of Plastic Surgery experience.  Our ambulatory care facility offers you the advantages of reduced cost, easy access and a brief stay in a pleasant, private environment.  Our facility is designed to offer our patients personalized care by a friendly, thoughtful, and experienced staff.  The office and Surgicenter are thoroughly inspected every three years by thee AAAASF (American Association for Accreditation of Ambulary Surgery Facilities).

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

The morning of your breast augmentation procedure you will meet with Dr. Bloom, the CRNA who will administer your anesthesia, and our surgical nurse.  You will be provided as much time as you need for questions prior to your procedure.  You will be escorted to our operating room and pampered until you go to sleep.

Your incisions will usually be made in the armpit.  This is called the axillary approach.  This area usually heals better and with less of a scar. These incisions once healed can be  hidden in a wrinkle under the arms.  Dr. Bloom also uses the perio-areola and inframammary incisions.

The placement of the breast implants will be determined during your consultation with Dr. Bloom.  During the surgical procedure, Dr. Bloom will lift your breast tissue and skin to create a pocket, either underneath your chest wall muscle (Submuscular Placement) or directly behind the breast tissue (Subglandular Placement).  The implants are then centered beneath your breast tissue.

After Your Breast Augmentation Surgery

You are likely to feel tired and sore for a few days following your surgery, but you should be up and around in 24 to 48 hours.  Most of your discomfort can be controlled by medication prescribed by Dr. Bloom and a small pain pump which injects an anesthetic around the implant.  The pump will also be removed two days after surgery.

You should follow all post-operative instructions which will be given to your during your pre-operative visit with our nursing staff and given again to your care-taker the day of your surgery.

Your New Look

When your breast augmentation surgery has been completed, it’s an exciting time when you are feeling better and can enjoy the results of your new look.  Your decision to have breast augmentation is a highly personal one.  The most important thing is how you feel about it.  For many women, the result of breast augmentation is satisfying, even exhilarating, as they learn to appreciate their appearance.
